The simple, spartan accommodation at Dechen Chholing Goemba Guest House is a good choice for travelers who want a home base for hiking remote Ura Valley and who enjoy seeing village life close up. The guest rooms sleep several people comfortably and family meals are shared in the huge kitchen common room close by.
The main attraction here is the proximity to Dechen Chholing Goemba, a temple central to the life of Shingkhar villagers, and to several day hikes, including the moderate trek up to Shamsul Lhakang. This small temple built into the side of a cliff resembles a tiny Tiger's Nest, and the view from here over the mountains and the villages below is spectacular. Nearby Shingkhar village has a charm all its own. With a population of no more than 250 and isolated at 3,400 m (11,155 ft) — one of highest elevation villages in Bumthang — this treasure town has preserved a way of life that allows travelers to step back a few hundred years for just a while.
