Satsam Chorten

Just before the turn-off to Taktshang Lhakhang, the main road along Paro Valley passes the inconspicuous Satsam Chorten. Set with beautifully carved slates and surrounded by prayer flags, the chorten stands at a point that once marked the border between lands ruled by warring penlops. The revered leader of the Nyingma school of Vajrayana (Tibetan) Buddhism, Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche, was cremated near here in 1991 — his ashes are interred in another chorten outside Kyichu Lhakhang.
