Named by National Geographic as one of the “Unique Lodges of the World,” Zhiwa Ling is a fully Bhutanese-owned luxury hotel that combines traditional Bhutanese craftmanship with 21st century technology. Beautifully hand-carved woods, hand-painted ceilings and walls, and stonework are found throughout the 10-acre property, along with many special touches like a tea house, a temple within the hotel built with ancient timbers from famous Gangtey Monastery, and a Swedish in-floor heating system. With advance notice, guests are even offered Buddhist meditation classes taught by accomplished monks in Zhiwa Ling's Samden meditation house, which has a direct view to Taktsang, the Tiger’s Nest Monastery — the trailhead to which is just 2km away. Note that Zhiwa Ling has no elevators or air conditioning.
Zhiwa Ling has 45 rooms (42 Junior Suites, 2 One-bedroom Suites, 1 Royal Raven Suite). All of the Juniper Suites have private balconies and offer great views of the surrounding blue pine forests and mountains. The two one-bedroom suites — Blue Poppy and Takin — have a living room separate from the bedroom, and the Royal Raven Suite has a separate living room, two bedrooms, and its own shrine.
All rooms have traditional Bhutanese furnishings and satellite television, oak floors, under-floor heating, bathtub, minibar, free wifi, complimentary coffee and tea, room and laundry service, and lots of small amenities.
Zhiwa Ling has two restaurants: Lingka and Gawa. 70-capacity Lingka is open all day and serves modern international cuisine. 40-capacity Gawa is open for dinner and serves classic Bhutanese and Indian dishes. Private dining can be arranged. The cozy Mad Monk bar next to the reception desk in the lobby serves a variety of international beverages and local spirits and beers.
Menlha Spa, open daily from 9am to 10pm, offers a range of massage types, including their signature massage, traditional Thai, hot stone, upper body, foot, and acupressure. Facials and traditional outdoor hot stone baths are also available. There is a fitness center, sauna room, and steam room, as well as a yoga/meditation room for guests. Visiting yoga teachers provide special week-long yoga retreats throughout the year.
Two conference rooms, Chelela and Pelela Hall, have capacity for 160 and 60 people, respectively, and buffet dining is available for both. Zhiwa Ling's business center offers internet, printing, copying, faxing services.
