Coming out of the lush greenery and into the vast pit with scraped rock faces is in itself a sight to behold, a source of Bhutan’s coal wealth owned and operated by the S.D. Eastern Bhutan Coal Company, a pioneer in coal mining in the country.
Situated in the eastern district of Samdrup Jongkhar, some of the extracted coal is used at the S.D. Eastern Bhutan Ferro Silicon Ltd. plant, the product of which is then exported to India for the production of steel. The company also exports coal to India that is used to fuel India’s electricity needs.
The S.D. Eastern Bhutan Coal Company is situated 18km away from Dewathang town in Samdrupjongkhar.
