Home to the monastic body of Trashigang, which comprises roughly 200 monks, this dzong sees constant, lively activity. As the dzong also functions as the administrative headquarters of Trashigang, civil servants stream in and out amidst their daily duties, wearing their traditional dresses of gho and kira.
Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyel prophesied construction of the dzong; he foretold that it would consolidate the Drukpa rule in Eastern Bhutan.
Through its history the dzong has survived multiple invasions by Tibetan troops. Many ascribe this fact to the protection of the dzong by its guardian deity, Garab Wangchuk, who supposedly comes from Wamrong.
